A summer day that had promised to be like so many others quickly turned tragic in Carpentras, located in the Vaucluse region. On that day, two young children tragically lost their lives, a heartbreaking event that deeply affected their family and those close to them. While their loved ones are still trying to understand what exactly happened, the collected testimonies gradually shed light on the course of this harrowing day, set against the backdrop of exceptionally high temperatures.
A Look Back at June 22 in Carpentras

On Monday, June 22, 2026, as an intense heatwave swept across much of France, Kassim, aged 4, and Sadek, aged 2, passed away in Carpentras.
The initial information gathered, along with testimonies from those close to the family, describes a morning that had started without any issues. Aware of the high temperatures forecasted, the children’s mother, a 33-year-old woman, had decided to take them to the municipal swimming pool so they could enjoy some refreshing relief from the heat.
After spending about an hour at the pool, she left with her boys. Before returning home, she stopped briefly to run some errands. For several months, the mother had been living with her own mother in a complicated family situation linked to a recent separation.
Once at her mother’s house, she parked her car in the courtyard, fully exposed to the sun. According to testimonies, she went indoors for a few minutes to unload her shopping and take it inside the house.
Unanswered Questions Surrounding the Investigation

When the mother returned to her car shortly before 1 p.m., the situation had already turned tragic.
The vehicle’s doors were locked, and the two children remained inside. Neighbors, alerted by the mother’s cries, quickly intervened. Despite the rapid arrival of emergency services and resuscitation attempts, Kassim and Sadek could not be saved.
The open investigation will now need to precisely reconstruct the circumstances of this tragedy. Many questions remain unresolved: why were the children in the car at this moment? How long were they inside?
Authorities will also seek to determine whether the children were forgotten in the vehicle or if they went back into it themselves after arriving home.
The Grandmother’s Heartfelt Testimony
A few days after the tragedy, the boys’ grandmother chose to speak out in order to put an end to some rumors circulating about the incident.
Deeply shaken, she explained that the family was going through an exceptionally difficult time. She lamented the public speculation and emphasized that no suspicious elements had been found at this stage of the investigation.
She also highlighted the significant impact of the heatwave within the context of that fateful day. The grandmother described her daughter as a mother overwhelmed by heavy personal concerns and facing considerable mental strain.
Those close to the family talk about a woman profoundly affected by the tragedy. Her sister revealed that the mother has been crying constantly since the accident and has struggled to speak. She was even hospitalized for several days following these events.
A Family Shattered by Loss
On Friday, June 26, Kassim and Sadek were laid to rest together in a cemetery in Carpentras.
Forensic analyses established that their deaths were due to prolonged exposure to excessive heat. At the time of the tragedy, the outside temperature was around 48 °C. According to investigations, the heat inside the vehicle parked in full sunlight without air conditioning could have exceeded 70 °C.
As the investigation continues, a grieving family struggles to cope with their immense sorrow and to understand how an ordinary day could turn into a devastating catastrophe.
While awaiting the final conclusions of the inquiry, their loved ones cling to the memory of the two little boys, whose memory remains vividly alive in their hearts.
